Language distinction
It is no doubt that English language is the primary preference in education sectors as well as in homes but the increasing use of English can be harmful for other cultural and ethnic languages.
English is internationally accepted and it is the most commonly used language in the world for work, education and legal sectors. In many countries of the world, English is not the national language yet people are more interested in learning English and in doing so they often think less of their own cultural language for example our very own homeland i.e. Pakistan. In such countries people think that they can only be successful if they are fluent in English and speaking English has become a status symbol whereas there are many examples of countries whose people value their own language and are still globally successful and recognized for example China.
If not preserved, languages can extinct. The preservation of language can only be done by learning and speaking that particular language. Many anthropologists have preserved the dying cultures by preserving their language for example the Dalmatian language was spoken in Dalmatia, a coastal region of Croatia. Its last known native speaker died as the result of an explosion. The Dalmatian language is being revived by cultural anthropologists, and today is estimated that there are about 20 fluent Dalmatian speakers. The hidden meaning, rules and norms of a culture are embedded deep in its language and it is very important to preserve it.
There is no harm in learning English and being able to speak fluent English when you are not disrespectful towards your own language. We should give more than equal importance to our national or cultural languages because culture is stored in language and if we don’t value our culture then nobody else will.
